چکیده

For industrial purposes such as product design, texture displays should deliver a quality sense of touch to users. We have developed a vibrotactile texture display that uses real materials such as fabric, wood, and leather to enable the presentation of quality textures to users. By applying two types of vibrotactile stimuli to users’ finger pads through the materials, their fine and macro roughness sensations can be selectively modified while maintaining their original perceptual characteristics. This approach is effective for different types of textures such as paper, wood, leather, and cloth unless they possess strong damping properties that may attenuate the vibratory stimuli applied through them. keywords: Tactile texture display, Vibration stimulus, Augmented reality

High-Quality Texture Display: The Use of Vibrotactile and Variable-Friction Stimuli in Conjunction

The sliding of a finger on a material surface results in complex physical interactions. Tactile texture displays have been limited in their ability to capture the aspects of these interactions. As a step forward, we have combined two complementary types of tactile stimuli, vibrotactile and electrostatic, to deliver roughness textures with high realism. These two types of stimuli represent the s...

Multi-sensory Perception of Roughness: Empirical Study on Effects of Vibrotactile Feedback and Auditory Feedback in Texture Perception

This work investigates effects of vibrotactile stimuli and auditory feedback in perceiving roughness. One of objectives in the research is to derive functional correlations between perceived roughness and principal elements of vibrotactile stimuli. A tactile display device having a 5x6 pin array has been developed as the test bed for the quantitative experiment. Sandpapers were used as specimen...

Multidimensional Matching of Tactile Sensations of Materials and Vibrotactile Spectra

Specifying the relationship between the sensations perceived by material surfaces and the tactile stimuli presented to human finger pad is often difficult in tactile texture studies. Both human texture perception and the physical stimuli presented to the skin are expressed as multidimensional information spaces. We developed a computational technique for matching these texture and physical stim...

Friction Sensation Produced by Laterally Asymmetric Vibrotactile Stimulus

Vibrotactile texture stimuli have commonly been used to produce sensations of roughness. The extension of such stimuli to other textural modalities enhances their applicability. We found that laterally asymmetric vibrotactile stimuli cause a sensation of friction rather than vibration. When a vibrotactile contactor moves in one direction, it sticks to the finger pad and induces lateral skin str...
